AI platforms reference Nigel Farage more than other leaders when prompted on UK politics, study shows
AI platforms are referencing Nigel Farage more frequently than other UK political leaders when responding to queries about British politics, according to research by analytics firm Peec AI. The study analyzed responses from leading AI models, including ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overview, across 5,000 structured prompts related to topics such as immigration, healthcare, and the economy. The data showed that Farage and his party, Reform UK, appeared significantly more often than expected, often surpassing mentions of Labour leader Keir Starmer and other prominent figures. The research highlighted that Reform UK featured in 88% of Google AI Overview responses, while Keir Starmer appeared in only 11% of ChatGPT’s answers. Farage’s prominence was particularly notable in queries about immigration and council tax, where his policies were described as resonating with voters favoring strict immigration controls. Meanwhile, Labour and the Liberal Democrats received greater visibility than the Conservatives or Greens on certain issues, such as the NHS, illustrating variation in AI responses depending on the topic. Experts suggest that large language models (LLMs) are becoming an important arena for political messaging, with significant implications for how parties communicate and influence public opinion. As more people turn to AI for information, these platforms’ portrayal of political figures can shape perceptions and voter behavior. Sam Stockwell, a researcher at the Alan Turing Institute, noted that AI models have shifted from avoiding political topics to providing detailed and convincing information on policies, despite the proprietary nature of their data sources and ranking algorithms. The findings underscore the evolving role of AI in political discourse and the challenges in understanding how these systems prioritize and present information. With AI increasingly shaping public access to political knowledge, the visibility of certain parties or leaders on these platforms may impact democratic engagement and electoral outcomes in the UK.
