Amber rush: spring storms bring semiprecious stones to British coast
Spring storms along the British coast have brought an unusual bounty to beachcombers: semiprecious stones such as amber and jet. Strong gales have stirred up the seabed, washing these rare organic gemstones ashore on the North Yorkshire and Suffolk coasts. Amber, fossilized tree resin dating back more than 35 million years, is typically rare in Britain but occasionally appears after rough weather, particularly along the Suffolk coastline between Felixstowe and Southwold, an area known as the "amber coast." Meanwhile, jet, a fossilized wood remnant over 180 million years old, is frequently found on the North Yorkshire coast near Whitby following violent storms and high tides. The process behind this phenomenon involves the storms’ ability to erode and shift the seabed, particularly the boulder clay that traps amber beneath the North Sea. As the clay is disturbed, lighter organic materials like amber and jet, which are about half as dense as mineral stones such as quartz, are carried by wave action toward the shore. Heavier mineral stones tend to remain on the seabed, making amber and jet more likely to be found washed up after turbulent weather. This natural occurrence not only offers a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts but also highlights the dynamic geological processes shaping the British coastline. The presence of these stones serves as a reminder of the ancient natural history embedded beneath the sea and the ongoing interaction between weather patterns and coastal geology. The seasonal arrival of amber and jet enriches the cultural and natural heritage of these coastal regions, attracting interest from both scientists and the public alike.
