American Airlines picks SpaceX's Starlink for in-flight Wi-Fi on more than 500 planes
American Airlines has selected SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to provide in-flight Wi-Fi on more than 500 of its narrow-body aircraft, including the Airbus A321neo. The airline plans to begin installing the service early next year, marking a significant expansion of Starlink’s presence in the commercial aviation sector. This decision follows a recent evaluation of Starlink alongside Amazon’s Project Kuiper (Leo) and reflects American’s strategy to enhance connectivity for its passengers. The move positions American Airlines alongside other major U.S. carriers such as United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, all of which have also adopted Starlink for in-flight internet. However, American will continue using existing providers like Viasat and Panasonic on its Boeing fleet for the time being. The upgrade aligns with a broader industry trend of airlines investing in faster, more reliable Wi-Fi to attract higher-spending customers and improve the overall travel experience. Earlier this year, American introduced free Wi-Fi for members of its frequent flyer program, following similar initiatives by United and Delta Air Lines. The competition among airlines to offer superior in-flight connectivity is intensifying, with some carriers exploring alternative providers such as Amazon’s Leo, which Delta plans to deploy on hundreds of jets starting in 2028. Enhanced internet service is increasingly viewed as a key differentiator in the crowded airline market, with potential revenue opportunities from personalized advertising and other digital services. For SpaceX, the deal further cements Starlink’s role as a leading provider of satellite-based internet, contributing to the company’s $11.39 billion revenue from connectivity services last year. This growth comes as SpaceX prepares for a highly anticipated initial public offering, which could be one of the largest tech IPOs in recent history.
