Birkenhead Tunnel to fully close four times this month
The Queensway Mersey Tunnel, commonly known as the Birkenhead Tunnel, will undergo full closures on four consecutive nights to facilitate essential maintenance work. The tunnel will be closed to all traffic from 9:00 pm to 6:30 am on April 27, 28, 29, and 30, with the Kingsway (Wallasey) Mersey Tunnel remaining open as an alternative route. Commuters are advised to allow extra time for their journeys during these periods due to the closures. These scheduled closures are part of ongoing efforts by Liverpool City Region authorities to maintain critical transport infrastructure and ensure safety and reliability for users. The Birkenhead Tunnel is a vital link connecting Liverpool and the Wirral Peninsula, and its temporary closure is necessary to carry out repairs and upkeep that cannot be performed during normal operating hours. The Kingsway Tunnel will continue to operate, providing a key alternative crossing over the River Mersey. In addition to transport updates, Liverpool City Council has released a series of public notices related to planning applications and local developments. These include proposals for property renovations, changes of use, and new construction projects across the city. Notable applications include window and door replacements at residential and commercial properties, the refurbishment and extension of St Gabriel’s Gatehouse, and signage installations at Exchange Court. These notices reflect the council’s commitment to transparency and public engagement in urban planning and development decisions. The public notices serve as an important resource for residents and stakeholders to stay informed about changes affecting their communities. They cover a wide range of issues, from roadworks and traffic diversions to licensing and conservation area regulations, reinforcing local authorities’ accountability and responsiveness to public needs.
