Brazil's former spy chief detained by ICE agents in US
Alexandre Ramagem, Brazil’s former chief of intelligence and a close ally of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, has been detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Orlando, Florida. Ramagem was one of seven individuals convicted alongside Bolsonaro for plotting a military coup to keep Bolsonaro in power after his 2022 election defeat. Sentenced to 16 years in prison, Ramagem fled Brazil prior to the verdict, crossing into Guyana before arriving in the United States. Brazilian federal police confirmed the detention, attributing it to international cooperation with US law enforcement, though ICE did not disclose specific reasons for the arrest. Ramagem led Brazil’s intelligence agency, Abin, from 2019 to 2022 during Bolsonaro’s presidency. Besides his conviction for the coup attempt, he faces allegations of using his position to illegally spy on Bolsonaro’s critics, charges he denies. Following his fugitive status declaration by Brazilian judicial authorities, Brazil’s Supreme Court requested his extradition from the US in December. Ramagem has publicly stated he felt safe in the US and justified his move as a way to protect his family from what he called unjust arrest in Brazil. The case against Ramagem and Bolsonaro highlights ongoing political tensions in Brazil, where Bolsonaro and his supporters have challenged the legitimacy of the 2022 election results. Bolsonaro himself received a 27-year prison sentence for his role in the coup plot, a verdict that drew criticism from former US President Donald Trump, who labeled the investigation a "witch hunt" and previously imposed, then lifted, sanctions on the Brazilian Supreme Court judge overseeing the case. Ramagem’s detention in the US could lead to deportation proceedings, though his legal team is expected to contest this move. The situation underscores the complex international dimensions of Brazil’s political crisis and the broader implications for rule of law and democratic governance in the region.
