Bright idea? UK firm pioneers data centres using lampposts

A UK-based company, Conflow Power Group Limited (CPG), is pioneering a novel approach to data centres by integrating low-powered AI computing units into thousands of solar-powered smart lampposts. The firm has signed an agreement with a Nigerian state to deploy 50,000 of these “iLamps,” which combine energy-efficient AI processing with street lighting. Each iLamp is equipped with a cylindrical solar panel and batteries to power a small AI chip developed by NVIDIA, designed to operate on just 15 watts. CPG envisions that a network of these lampposts could collectively function as a distributed data centre, reducing reliance on traditional grid energy. While the technology offers environmental benefits and innovative applications, experts caution that the iLamps are not a substitute for the high-capacity data centres required for the most demanding AI workloads. Instead, they may be suited for lighter AI tasks such as surveillance and traffic monitoring. The iLamps are already in use in a Warwick Hospital car park, where they provide CCTV monitoring and number plate recognition. In Nigeria, the units will be equipped with AI cameras to detect parking violations, speeding, and seatbelt compliance, with potential future uses including facial recognition to identify wanted or missing persons. Security and privacy concerns have been raised regarding the deployment of AI-enabled cameras in public spaces. CPG acknowledges the risk of theft, noting that the chips are designed to be disabled if removed. The company emphasizes that all surveillance features will be implemented in partnership with relevant authorities and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, CPG envisions interactive capabilities for the lampposts, such as allowing pedestrians to engage with the devices through simple gestures, potentially enabling new forms of public interaction and voting. This initiative reflects broader trends in decentralizing data processing and integrating AI into urban infrastructure, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of balancing technological innovation with security and privacy considerations.
