Canadian from hantavirus-hit cruise ship tests positive
A Canadian passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship, which experienced a hantavirus outbreak in April, has tested presumptively positive for the virus, according to health officials in British Columbia. The individual, one of four Canadians isolating on Vancouver Island after disembarking the ship in Tenerife, developed mild symptoms. This case raises the total number of infections linked to the cruise to 11, with three deaths reported, two of which have been confirmed as hantavirus-related. The other Canadians from the ship are either isolating in Ontario, British Columbia, or Yukon, with no additional positive cases reported so far. The MV Hondius, which departed Argentina on April 1, docked in Tenerife recently, allowing passengers to disembark and begin isolation protocols. The ship is scheduled to arrive in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where remaining crew members will disembark. Oceanwide Expeditions, the ship’s owner, confirmed no symptomatic individuals remain on board. British Columbia’s senior health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, emphasized that hantavirus differs significantly from respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and influenza, noting it does not have pandemic potential. She also indicated that isolation periods for exposed individuals, initially set at 21 days, might be extended following this new case. Hantaviruses are typically transmitted through rodents, but the Andes strain, believed to be involved in this outbreak, can spread between humans. Symptoms include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, gastrointestinal issues, and respiratory distress. The World Health Organization recommends a 42-day isolation period for those exposed to the virus. Despite the seriousness of the infections and fatalities, health authorities maintain that the risk of a widespread outbreak remains very low. Canadian and international health agencies continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further transmission.
