Electrification emerges as COP31 priority
The Turkish COP31 President, Murat Kurum, alongside the Australian host government and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), has emphasized electrification as a central focus ahead of the upcoming COP31 climate talks. Speaking at the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial, Kurum called for a global shift from fossil fuels and biofuels to electricity across vehicles, industry, and buildings. He highlighted the need to both decarbonize electricity generation and expand electrification in all sectors, aiming to increase the share of electricity in final energy consumption, which currently stands at around 20% globally. Kurum stressed the importance of making future technologies widely accessible and inclusive, ensuring that no communities are left behind in the transition. IRENA’s head, Francesco La Camera, supported this call by advocating for raising electricity’s share of final energy consumption to 35% by 2035. This target reflects a broader ambition to accelerate the global energy transition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by shifting energy use toward cleaner, renewable electricity sources. The push for electrification aligns with the broader objectives of COP31 to address climate change by transforming energy systems worldwide. Increasing electrification is seen as a critical strategy to decarbonize sectors traditionally reliant on fossil fuels, such as transportation and manufacturing. The coordinated call from Turkey, Australia, and IRENA underscores the urgency of global cooperation to implement scalable clean energy technologies and infrastructure. While the discussions did not directly address geopolitical tensions or recent fluctuations in oil and gas prices, the emphasis on electrification signals a strategic move to reduce dependence on volatile fossil fuel markets. This approach aims to enhance energy security and sustainability, contributing to the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement and global climate resilience.
