Energy secretary says White House is open to suspending gas tax amid soaring prices
Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the Trump administration is considering all options to reduce soaring gasoline prices, including the possibility of suspending the federal gas tax. Speaking on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Wright emphasized the administration’s openness to measures that could lower costs for consumers amid a national average gas price of $4.52 per gallon, a more than 50% increase since the onset of conflict with Iran. While he acknowledged the trade-offs involved, Wright confirmed that the administration supports exploring various ideas to ease the financial burden on Americans. The federal gas tax currently stands at about 18 cents per gallon, and Democrats in Congress have introduced legislation to temporarily suspend it until October. Wright refrained from predicting whether gas prices might reach $5 per gallon, citing the unpredictability of energy markets. He highlighted the ongoing 47-year conflict with Iran as a key factor influencing prices, noting the country’s hostility toward the U.S. and Israel. Despite the challenges, Wright pointed to the strength of U.S. oil and natural gas production as a positive factor in the energy landscape. Gas prices have continued to rise amid Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for global oil supplies. The U.S. had initiated “Project Freedom,” an operation to escort ships through the strait and counter Iran’s control, but the effort was paused recently. Experts suggest that while U.S. sanctions and blockades could strain Iran’s oil revenues, the country may endure the pressure for months. The ongoing geopolitical tensions and their impact on energy markets remain a significant concern, especially as the midterm elections approach and fuel costs continue to affect American consumers.
