Family 'let down' by verdict at Ironman death inquest
A coroner has returned a verdict of accidental death in the case of Brendan Wall, a 45-year-old man who drowned during the Ironman 70.3 triathlon event in Youghal, Co Cork, in August 2023. Mr Wall, originally from Slane, Co Meath, was one of two participants who died during the event, which took place amid rough conditions following Storm Betty. The inquest into his death resumed after a similar verdict was recorded for the other victim, 64-year-old Ivan Chittenden from Toronto, Canada. The triathlon’s swim leg was notably hazardous, with strong winds, heavy rain, and high seas creating chaotic scenes. Witnesses described swimmers converging on a buoy in difficult conditions, with many showing signs of exhaustion. A safety volunteer and nurse, Catherine Sheehan, reported seeing Mr Wall suddenly stop swimming and suspected he was having a heart attack. Despite rescue efforts, he could not be resuscitated. The inquest heard testimony from participants and safety personnel but declined to summon representatives from Cork County Council, Ironman, or Triathlon Ireland to give evidence. Mr Wall’s family expressed deep disappointment and frustration over the verdict and the handling of the inquest. They criticized the lack of accountability from the event organizers and local authorities, emphasizing that the absence of key witnesses deprived them of the opportunity to fully understand the circumstances surrounding Brendan’s death. The family’s legal team had requested these witnesses be called, but the coroner declined, stating he would not investigate every aspect of the event. The family stressed that their pursuit of answers was not only about understanding Brendan Wall’s death but also about ensuring safety improvements to prevent similar tragedies in the future. They described feeling let down by the process and the missed opportunity to learn lessons that could protect other athletes participating in such events. The case highlights ongoing concerns about safety protocols and emergency preparedness at endurance sporting events held in challenging conditions.
