Family pays tribute to girl, 15, who died after swimming at Merseyside beach
A 15-year-old girl, Chiedza Nyanjowa, died after getting into difficulties while swimming at Formby beach on the Merseyside coast during the recent bank holiday. Despite efforts by members of the public to assist her and subsequent treatment at Alder Hey children’s hospital, she passed away on Saturday. Her family described her as a bubbly and kind-spirited young person who loved cooking, attending church, and aspired to become a nurse to give back to others. A report on her death has been submitted to the Sefton coroner’s office. Chiedza’s death is part of a broader pattern of fatalities linked to open water incidents during the current heatwave, with at least 14 people reported to have died after getting into trouble in bodies of water across the UK. In a separate case, a 19-year-old man died after being pulled from Balderton Lake in Nottinghamshire, where emergency services responded following reports of a man entering the water. Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances and the family has been informed and supported. Meanwhile, emergency services in Norfolk continue to search for a man reported missing in the River Yare near Surlingham. The search has involved police, fire, coastguard, and air ambulance teams using specialist equipment such as drones, thermal imaging, and sonar. These incidents highlight the dangers of swimming in open water, especially during hot weather when people seek relief from the heat. Authorities have issued warnings about the risks associated with open water swimming, emphasizing that hidden hazards beneath the surface make such environments particularly perilous. The rising number of water-related deaths during the heatwave underscores the importance of public awareness and caution when engaging in recreational activities near lakes, rivers, and coastal areas.
