First of five men found alive in flooded Laos cave rescued
The first of five men trapped in a flooded cave in Laos has been successfully rescued after more than a week underground. The group, initially seven in number, were trapped in a remote cave in central Xaysomboun province following flash floods on May 20. Rescue divers found the men huddled together approximately 300 meters from the cave entrance. Two other men remain missing as the operation continues. The trapped men had been hunting for gold when sudden flooding cut off their exit. After their discovery on Wednesday, rescuers faced a race against time amid forecasts of further thunderstorms and heavy rain in the region. The men were reported to be suffering from chest pains and severe hunger, with footage showing them covered in mud and visibly distressed. Initial plans to pump water out of the cave failed, prompting consideration of teaching the men to scuba dive to navigate their escape. The rescue effort has drawn international attention and support, with specialist divers from Thailand, Indonesia, France, and Australia arriving to assist. The operation bears similarities to the 2018 rescue of a Thai youth football team trapped in a cave for 18 days. Finnish diver Mikko Paasi, who participated in that mission, is also involved in the current rescue, highlighting the challenging and unpredictable conditions rescuers face in such environments. Details on how the first man was extracted have not been fully disclosed, with officials promising further explanations. The rescue team continues to assess the condition of the remaining four men found alive and plans to intensify the search for the two still missing. The ongoing mission underscores the dangers of cave exploration during monsoon seasons and the critical importance of international cooperation in complex rescue operations.
