Girl, 6, has sight restored through gene therapy

A six-year-old girl from Stevenage, Saffie Sandford, has had her sight restored through pioneering gene therapy after being diagnosed with Leber's Congenital Amaurosis (LCA), a rare inherited eye condition that impairs vision from birth. Saffie underwent Luxturna treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, receiving injections of a healthy gene copy directly into each eye in two procedures spaced several months apart. Her mother described the therapy as life-changing, likening it to "someone waving a magic wand" to restore her daughter's ability to see in the dark. LCA prevents the eye cells from producing a crucial protein necessary for normal vision, causing low vision in daylight and complete blindness in low light, with many patients losing sight entirely by adulthood. Saffie had been short-sighted since age two and was diagnosed with LCA at five after her parents noticed her difficulty seeing in dim conditions. Prior to treatment, everyday activities such as eating, playing, and attending parties were challenging, and she was unable to participate in events like trick-or-treating. The gene therapy, administered through a one-off procedure, represents a significant medical advancement as the first treatment of its kind for one of the genetic causes of LCA available on the NHS. Following treatment, Saffie’s vision improved dramatically, enabling her to navigate dark environments independently and enjoy activities previously impossible. Her peripheral vision in daylight has also shown improvement, and her family reports she is thriving with no visible signs of the condition. This successful case highlights the potential of gene therapy to transform the lives of patients with inherited retinal diseases, offering hope for those affected by similar conditions. It underscores the importance of early diagnosis and access to cutting-edge treatments, marking a milestone in the fight against genetic blindness.
