Harry Maguire given extra one-match ban for ‘joke’ comment towards officials
Harry Maguire has been handed an additional one-match suspension by the Football Association (FA) following his red card in Manchester United’s Premier League match against Bournemouth. The 33-year-old defender was sent off for a foul on Evanilson, which led to a penalty scored by Eli Junior Kroupi, helping Bournemouth secure a 2-2 draw. Maguire will now miss Manchester United’s upcoming game against Chelsea, adding to his absence from the previous match. The FA’s decision came after the fourth official, Matthew Donohue, filed an Extraordinary Incident Report alleging that Maguire directed abusive language towards him while leaving the field. According to the report, Maguire shouted, “You’re a joke. You’re all a fucking joke.” Maguire contested the exact wording, stating he said something along the lines of “it is a fucking joke.” After admitting the charge, Maguire was fined £30,000 and given the extra one-match ban by an independent Regulatory Commission. This suspension further complicates Manchester United’s defensive options ahead of their clash with Chelsea. Maguire’s absence joins that of fellow centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez. De Ligt has been sidelined since November due to a back injury, while Martínez is serving a three-match ban following a red card for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair during a recent match against Leeds. United’s head coach, Michael Carrick, criticized Martínez’s dismissal as “one of the worst” decisions he has seen, and the club is reportedly appealing the ban. With all three senior centre-backs unavailable, Manchester United may be forced to rely on young defenders Ayden Heaven, 19, and Leny Yoro, 20, to fill the defensive line against Chelsea. The situation highlights ongoing challenges for United’s defensive stability during a crucial phase of the Premier League season.
