How a PLC course can forge your path in education after the Leaving Cert

As Leaving Certificate exams approach, students now have more pathways to third-level education beyond traditional CAO points. One notable option is the Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) course, designed for recent school leavers and adults returning to education. Typically lasting one to two years, PLCs offer focused study in specific areas, helping students build academic skills and confidence before progressing to higher education or the workforce. Donnchadh O’Mahony, a guidance counsellor at Loreto College in Dublin, describes PLCs as a transitional step that equips students with essential skills for success in third-level education. While some universities reserve places for students who complete relevant Level 5 PLC courses, progression to degree programs through this route is not guaranteed. PLCs attract a diverse range of students, including those who may feel socially or academically unprepared for university, those who missed CAO entry requirements, and Leaving Cert Applied students seeking further education. Additionally, individuals without a Leaving Cert can apply for PLCs through their local Education and Training Board. The experience of Ryan Finnegan illustrates the potential benefits of PLCs. After falling short of the points needed for psychology courses in 2021, he enrolled in a PLC in Applied Psychology at Blackrock College of Further Education. The course helped him regain confidence and demonstrated his academic capability. However, Finnegan notes the intense competition for progression to Level 8 degrees via the PLC route, requiring near-perfect results. He is now in his final year studying Applied Psychology at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dublin, crediting the PLC with opening doors he initially thought were closed due to high points requirements. PLCs provide a valuable alternative for students seeking to enhance their qualifications and readiness for higher education or employment. As the education landscape evolves, these courses offer flexible, supportive pathways that can help bridge gaps and expand opportunities beyond traditional Leaving Cert outcomes.
