How worried should we be about hantavirus?
An outbreak of hantavirus aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius, which set sail from Argentina a month ago, has resulted in three passenger deaths and multiple medical evacuations. The ship carried passengers from various countries, and health authorities have launched an extensive contact-tracing operation to identify and monitor individuals potentially exposed to the virus. Confirmed and suspected cases have been reported among passengers, with infections traced to several countries including the UK, South Africa, the Netherlands, the US, and Switzerland. The virus involved is the Andes strain of hantavirus, which is known to spread differently from highly contagious viruses like Covid-19 or influenza. While human-to-human transmission is possible, it requires close and prolonged contact, making widespread community transmission unlikely. The outbreak’s origin remains unclear but is believed to be linked to exposure to rodents or their droppings during the cruise’s visits to remote wildlife areas. The confined living conditions on the ship, including shared cabins and dining spaces, may have facilitated some transmission among passengers. Health experts emphasize that hantavirus does not spread through casual contact in public settings such as shops, workplaces, or schools. Symptoms typically develop two to four weeks after exposure but can appear later. The three fatalities include a Dutch woman who disembarked at St Helena island and her husband, who died earlier on the ship. Authorities continue to monitor all passengers and contacts, including those on flights taken after the cruise, to prevent further spread and ensure timely treatment. The World Health Organization and other health bodies stress that the risk to the general public remains low despite the seriousness of the outbreak on the vessel.
