Humanoid robots show rapid advances as they race past humans in Beijing half-marathon

Dozens of Chinese-made humanoid robots demonstrated remarkable progress in athletic performance by outpacing human runners in the second Beijing E-Town half marathon. More than 100 robots competed on parallel tracks to avoid collisions with human participants, a significant increase from the 20 robots in last year’s inaugural race. The winning robot, developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor, completed the half-marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, surpassing the human world record for the distance, although it required assistance after crashing near the finish line. This marked improvement contrasts sharply with the previous year’s event, where most robots struggled to start or finish the race, and the winning time was more than twice that of the human champion. The rapid advancements in robot speed and agility highlight significant technological progress in humanoid robotics. The robots’ ability to run faster than professional athletes underscores their growing physical capabilities and potential applications beyond entertainment or novelty. China’s ambition to become a global leader in humanoid robotics is supported by extensive government policies, including subsidies and infrastructure investments aimed at nurturing local firms. The country’s commitment to this emerging industry was also showcased during the CCTV Spring Festival gala, where Unitree humanoid robots performed complex martial arts routines alongside human performers. These developments signal the expanding role of humanoid robots in various sectors, from industrial and hazardous work environments to potential military uses, reflecting broader trends in automation and artificial intelligence innovation.
