Iranian American woman arrested in Los Angeles for alleged arms trafficking

Shamim Mafi, a 44-year-old Iranian American woman, was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of trafficking weapons on behalf of the Iranian government to contacts in Africa, including Sudan. Federal prosecutors allege that Mafi brokered the sale of drones, bombs, bomb fuses, and millions of rounds of ammunition manufactured in Iran. The charges stem from her involvement in deals facilitated through her company, Atlas International, with one contract reportedly valued at over €60 million. Mafi faces up to 20 years in federal prison and is scheduled for her initial court appearance in Los Angeles. Mafi, a lawful permanent resident of the United States since 2016, has maintained residences in California while frequently traveling to Iran, Turkey, and Oman. According to a criminal complaint, she lived in Istanbul from 2013 to 2016 and disclosed that her first husband was an officer in Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. The complaint details how Mafi and an unnamed co-conspirator allegedly coordinated weapons sales across multiple locations, including California. One notable transaction involved coordinating the travel of a Sudanese delegation to Iran, through which Mafi reportedly earned €6 million. The arms trafficking allegations carry significant geopolitical implications, particularly given Sudan’s ongoing civil war since 2023, which has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths and displaced millions. The weapons supplied through these deals could exacerbate the conflict and regional instability. Social media posts linked to Mafi show her posing with weapons in a Turkish warehouse and enjoying leisure time in California, underscoring the international scope of her activities. This case highlights ongoing concerns about illicit arms trafficking networks connected to state actors and their impact on global security. The prosecution of Mafi may shed light on the extent of Iran’s covert arms distribution efforts in Africa and the mechanisms used to circumvent international sanctions.
