Israeli strikes kill 14 in Lebanon amid ongoing ceasefire

Israeli air and artillery strikes in southern Lebanon have killed 14 people, including two children and two women, and injured 37, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Health. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted Hezbollah operatives and sites they said were being used to launch attacks against Israeli soldiers. The strikes followed warnings from the IDF urging residents in several southern Lebanese villages to evacuate immediately due to the escalating violence. In the same period, a 19-year-old Israeli soldier was killed and six others injured in a Hezbollah drone attack, while Israel intercepted three drones launched by Hezbollah toward its territory. The violence comes amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah that has been in place since mid-April but has been repeatedly tested by mutual accusations of violations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the IDF is actively responding to what he described as Hezbollah’s efforts to undermine the ceasefire. He reaffirmed Israel’s right to take necessary measures in self-defense, including preemptive actions to neutralize emerging threats. Netanyahu’s statements followed his order for intensified military operations against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, reflecting heightened tensions despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. The broader regional context includes diplomatic maneuvers involving Iran, a key backer of Hezbollah. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently returned to Pakistan after outlining Tehran’s position on resuming peace talks with the United States. These discussions are part of a US-brokered ceasefire extension aimed at facilitating negotiations, although Tehran remains cautious about Washington’s intentions. The ongoing conflict and diplomatic efforts highlight the complex interplay between military confrontations on the ground and high-stakes negotiations involving multiple regional and global actors. The situation remains volatile, with potential implications for broader stability in the Middle East.
