Lady Mayor: ‘Lawless London’ narrative is risking vital global deals

The Lady Mayor of the City of London, Susan Langley, has warned that negative perceptions of London as a lawless and unsafe city are jeopardizing crucial international partnerships, particularly with India. Speaking ahead of her visit to India, Langley emphasized that London remains one of the world’s safest, most open, and globally connected cities, integral to the UK-India economic relationship. With the UK-India Free Trade Agreement set to come into force soon, she highlighted the risk that misleading media narratives could undermine London’s position as a leading global financial hub and deter vital foreign investment. London continues to be a dominant player in the global financial ecosystem, with its insurance market now valued at $187 billion, surpassing its global competitors combined. The UK ranks second worldwide as an investment destination, and London is Europe’s most active capital-raising market and home to the continent’s largest tech ecosystem. Despite these strengths, research shows that negative narratives about London have surged by 150-200 percent in recent years, fueled by algorithm-driven misinformation that obscures the city’s true economic vitality. India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, is a key partner for London, with strong bilateral investment ties supporting over 600,000 jobs across both countries. The recently signed UK-India Free Trade Agreement represents one of the most ambitious trade deals the UK has ever made, signaling a commitment to a forward-looking partnership focused on growth and innovation. Langley stressed that this agreement should serve as a foundation for deeper collaboration rather than a final achievement. During her trip to New Delhi and Mumbai, Langley plans to engage directly with business leaders and investors to encourage Indian investment in the UK and foster startup collaboration. She underscored the importance of nurturing this relationship to ensure London remains a preferred destination for capital and innovation, reinforcing its global economic influence amid increasing international competition.
