LinkedIn cracks down on ‘AI slop’ posts and comments
LinkedIn is implementing new measures to suppress low-quality posts and comments generated by artificial intelligence, aiming to reduce what it terms “AI slop” on its platform. The Microsoft-owned company announced that content flagged as AI-generated will be less likely to appear in user recommendations and feeds beyond immediate networks. Early tests showed the system can accurately identify generic AI-generated content 94 percent of the time. LinkedIn emphasizes the importance of authentic, human-generated perspectives, especially as users increasingly rely on the platform for professional insights and guidance. The company’s vice president of product, Laura Lorenzetti, described “AI slop” as polished but low-effort content that lacks unique viewpoints or substantive value. LinkedIn’s new detection system targets signals such as generic or repetitive phrasing, aiming to prioritize posts that reflect genuine expertise and lived experience. While the crackdown limits the spread of generic AI content, LinkedIn is not banning AI tools outright. The platform continues to offer features like “Rewrite with AI” in its post composer, signaling a nuanced approach that encourages AI as a tool for refinement rather than a substitute for original thought. This move aligns with broader industry trends as other major platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Meta have also introduced stricter policies to identify and label AI-generated content. These efforts respond to concerns about the proliferation of inauthentic material that can undermine user trust and engagement. LinkedIn’s focus on maintaining genuine interaction and credible content reflects its role as a professional networking site where authenticity is critical to meaningful connections and knowledge sharing. By curbing the spread of generic AI-generated posts, LinkedIn aims to enhance the quality of discourse and protect the user experience from bots and fake profiles. The company expects these changes to become more widely felt across the platform in the coming months, reinforcing its commitment to fostering real human voices in an era of increasing AI-generated content.
