Man arrested after car hits group in town centre

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car struck five people in Arnold town centre, Nottinghamshire. The incident occurred shortly before BST on Saturday in Market Place, where a Vauxhall Astra was driven at a group following an altercation. One man sustained life-threatening injuries and remains critically ill in hospital, while four other men were also hurt. The 40-year-old suspect was detained and remains in police custody. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, but counter-terrorism units are not involved, and there is no indication of any ongoing threat to the public. Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, leading the investigation, emphasized the importance of respecting the privacy of those affected and urged the public not to speculate as inquiries continue. A police cordon was established around Market Place and nearby junctions for much of Saturday to facilitate the investigation. Local officials expressed concern and support for the victims. Michael Payne, MP for Gedling, described Arnold as a close-knit community and extended his best wishes to those injured, particularly the man in critical condition. Gedling Borough Council leader John Clarke highlighted the need for physical barriers along the road, noting previous calls to restrict traffic in the area to enhance public safety. Authorities have appealed for anyone with dashcam, CCTV, or mobile phone footage related to the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation. This event has raised questions about pedestrian safety in Arnold’s town centre and the measures needed to prevent similar incidents. The ongoing police investigation aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the altercation and the subsequent vehicle attack, with community safety remaining a priority.
