Modder releases loader to turn the PS5 into a Linux system

A developer and modder named Andy Nguyen has released a loader on GitHub that enables Linux to run on certain PlayStation 5 models. This loader currently supports disc drive versions of the PS5 running firmware versions 3.xx and 4.xx, with potential future support for additional firmware versions. Nguyen demonstrated the loader’s capabilities by running Linux on the console and showcasing a game, GTA 5 Enhanced with Ray Tracing, operating through the system, effectively turning the PS5 into a Steam Machine-like device. This development is significant as it offers PS5 owners an alternative use for their consoles beyond gaming, tapping into the growing interest in Linux as a gaming and computing platform. The move aligns with broader trends, such as the French government’s recent decision to replace Windows with Linux to reduce reliance on foreign technology. Additionally, Valve’s SteamOS and Linux gaming ecosystem have been gaining traction, although Linux still faces challenges in fully competing with Windows in the gaming market. Nguyen’s project is not the first instance of Sony consoles supporting Linux. The PlayStation 3 originally featured an OtherOS option that allowed users to install Linux and other software. However, Sony removed this feature in a firmware update, which led to a class action lawsuit and a subsequent settlement where affected users received compensation. Nguyen’s loader revives the concept of running Linux on Sony hardware, potentially opening new possibilities for PS5 users interested in alternative operating systems and gaming environments.
