More than half of UK voters support rejoining the EU, study finds

A recent study by Best for Britain reveals that more than half of UK voters support rejoining the European Union, with 53 percent in favor of full membership compared to 32 percent opposed. The research also shows that 61 percent back the government’s current efforts to “reset” relations with the EU, aiming to build closer ties. However, there is limited enthusiasm for intermediate arrangements such as joining the customs union or single market, which received lower support at 49 percent and 46 percent respectively. The findings highlight a clear preference among the public for full EU membership over partial engagement, with pro-EU campaigners emphasizing the economic and political benefits of rejoining. Naomi Smith, chief executive of Best for Britain, noted that membership offers a stronger economic boost and a political safeguard against sovereignty concerns often raised by right-wing critics. Tom Brufatto, the report’s lead author, argued that pursuing full membership is the most sustainable policy option, capable of generating growth and uniting progressive voters across the UK. Support for rejoining the EU is particularly strong among Labour, Liberal Democrat, and Green Party supporters, with backing exceeding 80 percent in these groups. In contrast, support is significantly lower among Conservative voters (39 percent) and Reform UK supporters (18 percent). The debate over the UK’s relationship with the EU has gained renewed urgency amid geopolitical tensions and economic challenges. Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock stressed the importance of strengthening ties with European neighbors in light of global instability and the unpredictability of the US administration. The government’s pledge to reset relations with Brussels reflects a recognition of the need to repair ties damaged by Brexit. As public opinion increasingly favors rejoining the EU, the study’s results may influence future political discussions and policy decisions regarding the UK’s place in Europe.
