Passengers allowed to leave norovirus-hit cruise ship
More than 1,000 passengers aboard the cruise ship Ambition were allowed to disembark in Bordeaux, France, following a norovirus outbreak that affected 49 people. The ship, operated by an Essex-based company, had been held in port while health authorities confirmed the presence of the highly contagious viral gastroenteritis. Passengers without symptoms were permitted to leave the vessel, while those showing signs of illness remained in isolation. Enhanced sanitation, medical monitoring, and hygiene protocols continue to be enforced on board. The outbreak was confirmed after samples tested positive for norovirus, which spreads through person-to-person contact or contaminated environments. Despite the high number of cases, no serious illnesses have been reported. The cruise line stated that normal operations, including shore excursions, would resume with reinforced preventative measures. A 92-year-old man died on board during the voyage, but his death was unrelated to the outbreak, and the cause remains unknown. Additionally, a separate passenger was hospitalized for an unrelated injury and is in stable condition. The Ambition had departed Belfast on May 8 and made a stop in Liverpool, where an increase in norovirus cases was reported. Passengers described strict safety measures, including the removal of self-service buffet options and closure of pools and jacuzzis. Some passengers witnessed others falling ill during the journey, highlighting the rapid spread of the virus in close quarters. French authorities have ruled out any connection between this outbreak and a hantavirus incident on a different cruise ship. Norovirus, often referred to as viral gastroenteritis, causes symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea but typically resolves within two days. The incident underscores the challenges cruise operators face in managing contagious illnesses in confined environments and the importance of swift public health responses to prevent wider outbreaks.
