Pavan optimistic of return after lift shaft fall

Italian professional golfer Andrea Pavan is optimistic about returning to competitive play after suffering a serious fall down an open lift shaft in February. The 36-year-old fell three stories at his private accommodation near Stellenbosch Golf Club in South Africa, just before the South African Open. He sustained severe shoulder damage and multiple vertebral fractures, requiring major surgery and a week-long hospital stay. Despite the severity of his injuries, Pavan remains hopeful about his recovery and eventual return to the sport. Pavan described the incident as he prepared to leave for breakfast and a pro-am event, returning to retrieve a forgotten locker key when the elevator doors opened without the lift car present. He fell to the bottom of the shaft, managing to call for help despite intense pain. Emergency responders freed him, and he was rushed to a local hospital for surgery on a complete shoulder fracture and spinal injuries. Following his discharge, Pavan has returned to his home in Texas to continue his rehabilitation. Recovery is expected to be a gradual process, with Pavan outlining key milestones: bone healing around three to six months, followed by regaining joint mobility. He acknowledged the risks of complications such as necrosis due to compromised blood flow but remains positive about his progress. The shoulder injury is particularly challenging given the demands of a golf swing, and Pavan anticipates it may take up to a year before he can resume full play. He emphasized the uncertainty surrounding his recovery but is committed to taking it step by step. Throughout his ordeal, Pavan has received significant support from the golfing community, with many players visiting him in hospital during the tournament. He expressed gratitude for the encouragement and camaraderie, which has been a vital source of strength during his rehabilitation. As a two-time DP World Tour winner, including victories at the 2018 Czech Masters and 2019 BMW International Open, Pavan’s return will be closely watched by fans and peers alike.
