Recruiters admit to using AI robots for job interviews

Recruiters are increasingly employing artificial intelligence (AI) to conduct job interviews and screen candidates, according to recent research. A survey of 500 recruiters revealed that 83 percent use AI in some capacity to accelerate the hiring process, with 28 percent relying on it to handle large volumes of applications. However, this growing reliance on AI has led to widespread skepticism among job seekers, with 53 percent believing their applications are rejected without human review. Another survey of 1,100 candidates found that 63 percent perceive AI-led recruitment as less fair than human judgment. Job seekers have expressed frustration with the impersonal nature of AI interviews. One part-time bartender described the experience as lacking feedback and human interaction, making it difficult to understand how they are perceived. Another candidate noted that while initially avoiding AI-driven interviews, they have come to accept AI’s role as a gatekeeper in the hiring process, especially amid prolonged job searches. The research also highlights a surge in AI-generated job applications, with nearly 80 percent of employers reporting an increase over the past year. The rise of AI in recruitment coincides with intensified competition for jobs. Data from the Office for National Statistics shows that vacancies per 100 jobs nearly halved between May 2022 and February 2025, while applications per job posting increased by 286 percent in the year leading to November 2024. This heightened competition has driven employers to adopt AI tools to manage the influx of candidates more efficiently. Lee Biggins, CEO of CV-Library, emphasized that while AI can streamline certain administrative tasks, it should not replace human judgment in recruitment. He warned that over-reliance on AI risks unfairly screening out qualified candidates and eroding the personal touch essential to evaluating individual potential. Biggins called for a balanced approach where AI supports rather than supplants human intuition in hiring decisions.
