As flagged , Huffman (who goes “spez”) posted to the site on Thursday announcing that Reddit will become a “primarily logged-in experience,” and that providing the best version of Reddit “requires personalization.” Translation: There will be some kind of new wall around Reddit content that limits what unregistered users can see, presumably applying beyond mobile to the desktop site. He wrote that the “vast majority” of unauthorized access to Reddit, or “basically the scraping and stealing of Reddit’s data,” happens via logged-out browsing. S. in the coming months.” In response to a comment asking whether this meant users who arrive on Reddit while searching for solutions to technical problems are “going to get blocked by a login prompt constantly,” Huffman wrote that the company will “have to test and find the right balance.” “The one-off visitor from a shared link or search referred user aren’t the primary target here,” Huffman added. However, it seems obvious those users would be broadly affected. That includes people who don’t have a Reddit account but regularly add the word “Reddit” to their Google searches to find results that aren’t AI slop (this often remains the only sane way to diagnose errors in random gadgets). There are also all kinds of reasons a regular Reddit user might not always be logged in to an account, like privacy, incognito mode sessions, a preference for burner accounts, or simply a desire to read content without posting. Huffman noted that Reddit has rebuilt and is re-releasing an incognito mode that is “truly private,” though that requires using the app. Huffman insisted that Reddit doesn’t need or want to know anything about a user’s real-life identity, but later added that required logins would be good for the company’s ad business: “A non-targeted ad is just a waste of space for everybody.” One user pointed out the apparent contradiction, to which Huffman responded, “On Reddit, we target ads based on your interests that are expressed through the subreddits you spend time in.
