Riskiest skin cancer cases hit UK record high
The number of new melanoma skin cancer cases in the UK has surpassed 20,000 for the first time, reaching a record high of 20,980 diagnoses in 2022. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, and experts attribute the rise largely to excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun and sunbeds. Cancer Research UK estimates that around nine in ten melanoma cases could be prevented through better sun safety practices such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, and using sunscreen. Women tend to be diagnosed with melanoma at younger ages, often due to more frequent sunbathing and sunbed use, while men show higher rates later in life linked to prolonged sun exposure. The charity also notes that increased awareness and overdiagnosis—detecting cancers that may not have caused harm—could contribute to the rising numbers. Public health officials are particularly concerned about illegal sunbed use by minors, despite existing bans for under-18s. The government is considering new regulations requiring mandatory ID checks to prevent children from accessing sunbeds, aiming to reduce this avoidable cancer risk. Cancer Research UK emphasizes the importance of early detection, urging the public to monitor their skin for unusual changes such as new or evolving moles, sores that do not heal, or other abnormalities. Early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes. The charity’s chief executive highlighted the need for vigilance, especially during periods of intense sun exposure, such as the upcoming bank holiday weekend when temperatures are expected to reach 30°C in parts of the UK. The rising melanoma rates underscore the critical need for public education on sun safety and stricter enforcement of sunbed regulations. With skin cancer largely preventable, these measures could help curb the upward trend and reduce the burden of this high-risk cancer on individuals and the healthcare system.
