In April, she expressed pride after the UK government announced that SMA screenings would be introduced earlier than initially planned, starting in October 2026. Nelson has been an active advocate for SMA awareness, launching a petition to include the condition in the newborn blood spot screening test. The petition gained significant public support, surpassing 100,000 signatures, reflecting widespread concern for early diagnosis and treatment of SMA. Essex Police have not commented on the suspected theft, and the investigation remains ongoing.
