SpaceX scrubs first Starship V3 launch just before liftoff
SpaceX postponed the inaugural launch of its third-generation Starship rocket system at its Starbase facility in Texas, citing technical issues just seconds before liftoff. The rocket was fully fueled and the countdown had reached under 40 seconds when the launch was aborted due to a hydraulic pin on the launch tower arm failing to retract. The company plans to attempt the launch again the following day, pending repairs. This flight marks the 12th Starship launch attempt and the first since October 2025, representing a critical milestone for the upgraded Starship V3 hardware. The new Starship V3 features significant design improvements, including enhanced third-generation Raptor engines that provide greater thrust with a more streamlined configuration. The booster is designed to be easier for the launch tower to catch and includes fewer grid fins, while modifications aim to prevent propellant leaks that have plagued earlier versions. These upgrades are intended to increase reliability and move closer to SpaceX’s goal of a fully reusable mega-rocket, akin to its Falcon 9 system. This particular mission is not intended to achieve all of SpaceX’s long-term objectives for Starship V3. The flight will not attempt to recover the booster or the Starship vehicle, with both expected to perform controlled water landings in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans respectively. Additionally, the rocket will not reach true Earth orbit, meaning further missions will be necessary to demonstrate its capability to deliver commercial payloads into space. The timing of this launch carries added significance as SpaceX prepares for an initial public offering, putting pressure on the company to showcase tangible progress with its next-generation rocket program. Successful deployment of Starship V3 is crucial for SpaceX’s ambitions in space exploration and commercial satellite deployment, underscoring the importance of resolving technical challenges promptly.
