Spy chief to warn of ‘relentless’ Russian cyber attacks on UK and Europe
The head of GCHQ, Anne Keast-Butler, is set to deliver a stark warning about Russia’s persistent cyber attacks targeting the UK and Europe. In her inaugural annual lecture, she will outline how Russia is intensifying hybrid operations aimed at critical infrastructure, democratic processes, supply chains, and public trust. Keast-Butler will emphasize the urgency for both the public and businesses to significantly enhance their cyber security measures, describing the threat as “relentless” and calling for cyber security to become “10 times more urgent.” Keast-Butler is expected to highlight GCHQ’s ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia’s attempts to smuggle Western technology, defend against cyber attacks, and counter sabotage and assassination attempts. She will also note that despite Russia’s aggressive cyber campaign, its military position in Ukraine is deteriorating. The lecture will address the rapidly evolving technological landscape, pointing out that advancements in artificial intelligence and the rise of China as a science and technology superpower are reshaping the global security environment. She will urge collaboration between the technology sector and national security agencies to anticipate and respond to these changes swiftly. The warning follows earlier remarks from Dr. Richard Horne, head of the National Cyber Security Centre, who revealed that most significant cyber attacks on the UK originate from Russia and Iran. The NCSC reportedly handles around four major cyber incidents weekly and has cautioned businesses to prepare for large-scale attacks without relying on ransom payments. This heightened threat environment underscores the need for robust cyber defenses amid geopolitical tensions and the possibility of the UK becoming involved in international conflicts. The call to action spans all levels of society, from corporate boardrooms to individual households, stressing the importance of adopting stronger security practices such as replacing passwords with passkeys and embedding security into emerging technologies.
