Teaching student charged with online child abuse offences
Daniel Grey, a teaching student and former school council president at Kennington Primary School in Bendigo, has been charged with offences related to online child abuse material. Following the charges, Grey resigned from the school council and is currently barred from employment or volunteering in any school capacity. School officials have emphasized that the charges do not involve any students from Kennington Primary School. Grey recently completed a two-week supervised placement as a pre-service teacher at Bendigo South East College, from May 6 to May 19. The principal of the college, Justin Matt, informed parents and carers about the charges, assuring them that Grey was supervised throughout his placement and that no students at the school were implicated in the allegations. Despite this, the principal acknowledged the seriousness of the charges and the importance of transparency with the school community. The case is scheduled to return to Bendigo Magistrates' Court in September. Education authorities have been notified, and the Department of Education has been contacted for comment. The situation has raised concerns about safeguarding and the vetting processes for individuals involved in educational settings, highlighting the need for ongoing vigilance to protect students.
