These are the UK’s top-performing mobile networks

A recent survey of over 5,000 mobile users in the UK reveals that smaller mobile network providers are outperforming the country’s largest operators in customer satisfaction. Three, O2, and Lycamobile ranked among the lowest, with customer scores of 65%, 67%, and 68% respectively. Three received a particularly poor two-star rating across all categories, including network reliability and technical support, while O2 also scored just two stars for value for money and customer service, following recent price hikes. Even major networks like EE and Vodafone lagged behind, with scores of 74% and 72%, described as “stuck in the middle to lower reaches of the table.” In contrast, smaller providers such as Talkmobile, Giffgaff, Smarty, Lebara, and 1pMobile led the rankings, with Talkmobile topping the list at 83%. These networks impressed customers with strong performance in network reliability, customer service, and value for money. Notably, many smaller firms operate using the infrastructure of the major networks, offering comparable signal and coverage but at significantly lower prices. The average monthly cost for a SIM-only contract with the ‘big four’ providers was £16, compared to just £9 with smaller networks. For contracts including a phone, the average was £40 with the major operators versus £28 with smaller providers. The findings highlight a growing trend of consumers seeking better value and service from smaller mobile companies, especially amid rising living costs. Which? head of home products and services, Natalie Hitchins, emphasized that many smaller providers avoid mid-contract price increases, providing customers with more predictable bills. She encouraged consumers dissatisfied with their current providers to consider switching to alternatives that deliver better value and service, underscoring the competitive pressure smaller networks are placing on the traditional market leaders.
