Thornton Heath fire: Blaze rips through house converted into flats in south London

A significant fire broke out in a mid-terraced house converted into flats on Lenham Road in Thornton Heath, south London, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Seventy firefighters and ten fire engines responded to the blaze, which affected part of the ground and first floors, as well as the entire roof of the property, and also spread to part of a neighboring building. Despite the scale of the fire, there were no reported injuries. The fire was brought under control by 4:29 a.m. Fire crews from multiple stations, including West Norwood, Norbury, and Croydon, were deployed to tackle the blaze. A 32-metre turntable ladder was used as a water tower to combat the flames from above. Due to the heavy smoke produced, residents in the vicinity were advised to keep their windows and doors closed while firefighters worked to contain the incident. Station Commander Alec McNally praised the crews for their swift and safe response to the emergency. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to assess the circumstances that led to the outbreak.
