TikTok launches £3.99 subscription for no ads in UK

TikTok has introduced a new subscription service in the UK, charging users £3.99 per month for an ad-free experience. Starting immediately, users aged 18 and over will be notified and asked to decide by 11 November whether they want to pay for TikTok Ad-Free or continue using the platform for free with personalised advertisements. The subscription removes ads from users’ feeds but does not eliminate branded content marked with hashtags like "#ad." Those who opt to remain on the free version will continue to see targeted ads, with limited options to control data use for advertising. This move aligns TikTok with other social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat, which have introduced similar ad-free subscription models in recent years. TikTok’s UK managing director, Kris Boger, emphasized that advertising supports British businesses by helping them reach customers and create jobs, while the new subscription offers users greater control over their experience. The company plans to notify users gradually through pop-up messages over the coming months. The introduction of TikTok Ad-Free reflects a broader industry trend toward a "consent or pay" model, where users can either accept personalised ads or pay to avoid them. This shift is partly driven by UK data protection laws requiring platforms to obtain explicit consent for tracking and targeted advertising. Social media expert Matt Navarra noted that charging for an ad-free experience is becoming more common as companies seek revenue from users unwilling to be tracked online. The change marks a significant evolution in how digital platforms balance user privacy, advertising revenue, and content accessibility.
