Tinder and Zoom offer 'proof of humanity' eye-scans to combat AI
Tinder and Zoom have introduced iris-scanning technology to verify users' humanity and combat the rise of AI-generated fake accounts. The new system, developed by Tools for Humanity through its World ID program, allows users to scan their irises via an app or a dedicated device to receive a "proof of humanity" badge on their profiles. This initiative aims to distinguish real people from bots and deepfake impersonators, addressing growing concerns about AI-driven deception on digital platforms. The World ID system, co-founded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, generates a unique identification code stored on users’ smartphones once their humanity is confirmed. The technology was unveiled during a live event in San Francisco, which featured a deepfake video montage of historical figures emphasizing the need for reliable human verification online. Altman highlighted the increasing volume of AI-generated content and stressed the importance of being able to differentiate between human and machine interactions. Tinder and Zoom have faced significant challenges with fake and malicious accounts, often powered by AI to mimic human speech and behavior. On Tinder, these "bots" are frequently used to scam users, with some estimates suggesting that up to 30% of profiles may be AI-enhanced romance scammers. Such scams have led to substantial financial losses, with the US Federal Trade Commission reporting over $1 billion lost to romance fraud last year. Tinder has already implemented video selfie verification and now plans to offer World ID as an additional option for user authentication. This collaboration represents a broader effort by tech companies to enhance trust and safety in online interactions amid the rapid advancement of AI technologies. By incorporating biometric verification, platforms hope to reduce fraud, protect users, and maintain the integrity of digital communication and social networking spaces.
