UK internet users unknowingly give tech and artificial intelligence firms £194,000

British internet users generate an estimated £194,000 in commercial value for major technology and artificial intelligence (AI) companies over their lifetimes, according to a report by the Web3 Foundation. The analysis highlights how personal data—ranging from search queries and clicks to location signals and social media activity—is collected and monetised by powerful firms to fuel the internet and train AI systems. While this figure does not represent direct earnings for individuals, it underscores the vast economic scale of data-driven digital services. The study reveals a shift from traditional data use, such as targeted advertising via cookies, toward more complex applications in AI development. Companies like Amazon, Alphabet, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Meta reportedly earn up to £1,000 annually from each UK internet user, with emerging AI firms potentially generating even higher profits through intensive data utilisation. This growing reliance on personal data for AI training raises significant privacy concerns, as users often remain unaware that everyday online interactions, including using tools like ChatGPT or spell check, contribute to these commercial gains. The report also places this data-driven economy in the context of the soaring valuations of tech giants, noting Nvidia’s milestone as the first company to reach a $5 trillion market value, largely due to its AI partnerships. Microsoft and Apple have similarly surpassed the $4 trillion mark, reflecting the immense financial stakes tied to data and AI technologies. Web3 Foundation’s vice president of technical operations, Bill Laboon, emphasized the urgency of creating a more transparent, user-controlled internet as AI continues to evolve and data becomes increasingly valuable.
