UK spring sunshine prompts warnings over unsafe fake designer sunglasses
As spring sunshine encourages more people to wear sunglasses, experts have issued warnings about the dangers of counterfeit designer eyewear. Fake sunglasses often lack essential ultraviolet (UV) protection, posing significant risks to eye health. Unlike genuine sunglasses, which shield the eyes from harmful UV rays, counterfeit versions typically feature dark-tinted lenses without UV filters, causing pupils to dilate and allowing more damaging radiation to enter the eyes. Medical professionals emphasize that wearing fake sunglasses can be more harmful than wearing no sunglasses at all. Alex Day, a consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, explained that dark lenses without UV protection increase the risk of eye damage by exposing the cornea and other parts of the eye to intense UV light. Prolonged exposure to UV rays is linked to conditions such as photokeratitis (a painful sunburn of the cornea), early-onset cataracts, pterygia (non-cancerous corneal growths), certain eyelid cancers, and age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to vision loss. Optometry experts also highlight the natural protective mechanisms of the eye, such as pupil constriction and squinting, which reduce UV exposure in bright light. Wearing sunglasses with proper UV filters allows pupils to remain dilated without increasing UV risk, but counterfeit sunglasses remove this natural defense. James Wolffsohn, a professor of optometry at Aston University, stressed the importance of verifying UV protection when purchasing sunglasses. Counterfeit sunglasses are a common issue in the UK, with seizures of fake designer eyewear reported at major events and markets. The Intellectual Property Office recently highlighted the prevalence of counterfeit sunglasses mimicking brands like Chanel, Ray-Ban, and Prada. Experts advise consumers to look for safety marks, examine packaging quality, and be cautious of poor craftsmanship or logo errors to avoid purchasing unsafe counterfeit products.
