Uruguay’s Silva makes history after dramatic Giro d’Italia second stage

Uruguay’s Guillermo Thomas Silva made history by winning stage two of the Giro d’Italia, becoming the first Uruguayan to claim victory in a Grand Tour stage. The 221 km route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria was marked by challenging rain-soaked conditions and a major crash involving nearly 20 riders around the 198 km mark. The crash forced Australian Jay Vine and Norwegian Adne Holter to abandon the race due to injuries. Silva secured the win in a dramatic sprint finish, overtaking Spain’s Florian Stork and Italy’s Giulio Ciccone, while also taking the prestigious pink jersey from stage one winner Paul Magnier of France. The stage featured early breakaways by Mirco Maestri and Diego Pablo Sevilla, who built a five-minute lead before being reeled in by the peloton in the closing kilometers. The crash occurred on slippery roads near the end of the stage, with Marc Soler among the first to fall and several riders hitting guard rails. Vine was stretchered off and hospitalized, ending his race, while Soler also required medical attention. After a temporary neutralization, the race resumed with just over 18 km remaining, highlighted by an attack from Jonas Vingegaard on the Lyaskovets monastery pass. Despite his effort, the peloton caught the leaders in the final kilometer, setting up a frantic sprint. Silva, 24, described his victory as unexpected and emphasized the importance of timing his sprint perfectly. His triumph not only marks a personal milestone but also a significant moment for Uruguayan cycling on the international stage. The Giro will continue with a 175 km flat stage from Plovdiv to Sofia before the race returns to Italy, where it will resume after a rest day with a challenging route through Calabria. The event remains a key fixture in the cycling calendar, drawing top talent and showcasing endurance and strategy across diverse terrains.
