U.S. airlines are hiking fares — and travelers keep booking

U.S. airlines are raising fares amid soaring jet fuel prices caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, yet passenger demand remains robust. Since the onset of the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran two months ago, jet fuel costs have doubled in some regions, significantly increasing operational expenses for carriers. Despite these challenges, major airlines including JetBlue, American Airlines, Delta, and United report strong booking trends and anticipate revenue growth in the second quarter, with some forecasting increases of up to 16.5%. The surge in fuel prices, driven by the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has added over $6 billion in costs to the industry this year. Airlines have responded by trimming capacity to manage expenses, which has contributed to higher ticket prices. Data from the Airlines Reporting Corp. shows domestic economy fares have risen 21% year-over-year to an average of $570, while premium seats have increased 17% to about $1,444 per trip. Despite these hikes, consumer willingness to pay has remained steady, with travel agency ticket sales up 12% in March compared to the previous year. Executives express cautious optimism about sustaining demand through the peak summer travel season, although uncertainty remains about bookings later in the year, as travelers typically do not plan far in advance. Airlines are increasingly relying on revenue from premium seating options, which command significantly higher prices than economy class. This strategy, combined with disciplined capacity management, is expected to help carriers offset elevated fuel costs by early 2027 or possibly sooner. The current environment marks the most significant challenge for U.S. airlines since the COVID-19 pandemic, yet the resilience of travelers and strategic adjustments by carriers suggest the industry is navigating the crisis with a positive outlook. The ability of airlines to pass on costs to consumers without dampening demand will be critical in maintaining financial health amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.
