Who is Cathal O’Connor, the Sligo-based property developer facing jail for assault?
Cathal O’Connor, a prominent Sligo-based property developer and co-owner of Beldare, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a violent assault on three 13-year-old boys. The attack, which lasted 48 minutes, involved O’Connor threatening the teenagers with a saw and physically assaulting them until one lost consciousness. The court suspended three years of the sentence for six years, meaning O’Connor will serve two years in prison, with the start of his sentence deferred by two months to allow him to manage his business affairs. O’Connor is a director of 23 companies, including Goldcross Developments, which had €8.24 million in work in progress as of March 2025, and Altitude Distribution, which reported accumulated profits of €2.35 million. Beldare, described as a large-scale residential developer with nationwide operations, is a significant player in the north-west property market. Despite O’Connor’s conviction, the company’s full financial scope remains unclear due to limited public filings. The case has drawn attention due to the involvement of former Fianna Fáil TD Marc MacSharry, who has been lobbying on behalf of Beldare. MacSharry, who has longstanding ties with O’Connor, was unaware of the assault prosecution when he began representing the company through his consulting firm. He has made multiple official declarations regarding his lobbying activities and provided a character reference for O’Connor during sentencing. MacSharry maintains that his work for Beldare continues and that he complies with lobbying regulations. The assault occurred at a Collooney business park property owned by O’Connor’s family, where the boys were reportedly building a makeshift structure. During the attack, O’Connor allegedly threatened the boys with further violence and claimed influence over local authorities. The sentencing raises questions about the future leadership and operations of Beldare as O’Connor prepares to begin his prison term.
