Why Spotify has no button to filter out AI music
Frustration is growing among Spotify users over the increasing presence of AI-generated music on the platform, with no official option to filter out such content. Cedrik Sixtus, a software developer from Leipzig, responded by creating the Spotify AI Blocker, a tool that identifies and blocks suspected AI music by flagging over 4,700 artists based on community tracking, release patterns, and AI-style cover art. Despite its popularity, Sixtus warns that using the tool may violate Spotify’s terms of service. The issue has sparked wider debate within Spotify’s community, with some users uncomfortable with AI music’s quality or ethical implications. Spotify has taken limited steps to address concerns, including a voluntary feature launched in April that allows artists to disclose AI involvement in song credits. However, this system relies on self-reporting by artists and labels, leaving many AI tracks unlabelled. Spotify acknowledges the challenge of creating a comprehensive detection and filtering system, citing the need for industry-wide cooperation. The company faces a complex dilemma: balancing transparency and user choice without making value judgments about music creation methods. Experts highlight the broader implications for the music industry as AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated and widespread. Generative AI platforms like Suno and Udio can produce polished songs from text prompts within seconds, blurring the line between human and machine-made music. A recent Deezer–Ipsos poll found that 97% of listeners could not reliably distinguish AI tracks from human ones. The influx of AI music on streaming services raises concerns about revenue dilution for human artists, even though many AI tracks currently attract limited listens. As AI continues to evolve, Spotify and other streaming platforms must navigate the tension between innovation and authenticity. The company’s approach will influence listener trust, artist relations, and the future landscape of music consumption amid rapid technological change.
