Why tonight's full moon will be a rare occurrence

Tonight’s full moon is notable for being the smallest and farthest micromoon of the year, generating significant attention on social media. A micromoon occurs when the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its elliptical orbit, making it appear slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon. This particular micromoon will be about 406,368 kilometers away, marking it as the smallest and dimmest full moon visible in 2024. Despite the micromoon’s smaller size, the difference is difficult to discern with the naked eye but is evident in side-by-side photographic comparisons. It is important to note that the term “blue moon” does not refer to the Moon’s color, which will appear normal tonight. The phrase originated from a calendrical misunderstanding popularized in the 1940s and has since come to signify the rare occurrence of two full moons in one month.
