YouTube reveals major change to help you identify AI-generated content

YouTube is introducing enhanced AI disclosure labels and an automated detection system to identify AI-generated or AI-edited content more effectively. Creators will still be required to disclose AI use, but starting this month, YouTube’s new tools can automatically apply AI labels if creators fail to do so. Some AI labels, particularly those linked to content created with YouTube’s own generative AI tools or containing specific metadata, will be permanent. The updated labels will appear beneath long-form videos and as overlays on YouTube Shorts, aiming to provide viewers with immediate context about AI involvement. This move addresses growing concerns over the increasing difficulty in distinguishing real from AI-generated content online. YouTube emphasizes that these changes prioritize transparency while maintaining creator control, with labels designed to inform viewers without affecting video recommendations or monetization. For videos partially influenced by AI—such as those that are animated or slightly altered—the disclosure will be less prominent, appearing in the video description rather than as an on-screen label. The rollout builds on YouTube’s broader efforts to manage synthetic content, including its likeness-detection program expanded earlier this year to all creators aged 18 and older. This program alerts creators when AI-generated or altered videos use their likeness, allowing them to review and request removal of unauthorized content. Together, these initiatives reflect YouTube’s response to the rapid rise of generative AI and the platform’s commitment to transparency and user trust amid evolving digital content challenges.
