After 13 years of operation, the beloved independent West End bar Bosc will close permanently on June 20. Owner Emily Tankey announced the decision on social media, citing an inability to agree on new lease terms as the primary reason for shutting down. Despite the closure, Tankey expressed gratitude for the community and lifelong friendships formed at Bosc, describing it as “the best continuous house party” she has ever hosted. Bosc, which opened in 2013, quickly became known for its locally focused craft beer and gin offerings, including an early adoption of an all-Australian spirits lineup. The bar developed a close-knit relationship with neighboring venues The End and Flying Colours, creating a vibrant local scene. Tankey highlighted the personal significance of the bar, noting that many important relationships, including her partnership, originated there, and that the community built around Bosc will continue beyond its doors. The decision to close was influenced by a rent increase imposed by the landlord, which Tankey was unwilling to accept. She also indicated that the timing felt right, as she plans to relocate to Melbourne to focus on her craft beer brand, Better Together, and complete a master’s degree in accounting. Despite the closure, Bosc has been experiencing some of its strongest business figures recently, underscoring the bittersweet nature of the decision. Tankey reflected positively on the bar’s legacy and her own future, expressing pride in what Bosc achieved and optimism about the next chapter in her life.
