Farmstay murder accused 'rejected' by alleged victim, court hears

A man accused of murdering Maree Vermont at her home in Goldie, Victoria, has appeared in court where details of their troubled relationship were revealed. The court heard that Ms Vermont had explicitly rejected any intimate involvement with the accused, Mr Loosemore, who was staying at her property before her death. Ms Vermont had asked her son to monitor Mr Loosemore’s behavior, and the son left the day before the fatal fire that destroyed the house. At the time of the fire, only Mr Loosemore and Ms Vermont were present at the property. Mr Loosemore alerted a neighbor after the fire, admitting to an argument with Ms Vermont. Paramedics found a strong smell of petrol on Mr Loosemore and blood on his face and hands when treating him for smoke inhalation. Investigators noted that several fuel containers were missing from the property after the fire, and forensic testing found bloodstains on Mr Loosemore’s clothing that could not exclude Ms Vermont’s DNA as the source. The prosecution alleges that the fire and Ms Vermont’s death were linked to the accused’s actions, suggesting a motive rooted in rejection and conflict. However, Mr Loosemore’s defense lawyer challenged these claims, arguing that unreciprocated affection does not equate to a motive for murder or arson. The defense also emphasized that the prosecution’s case relies heavily on circumstantial evidence and that expert testimonies are less conclusive than suggested. The trial, expected to last four to five weeks, will include testimony from Ms Vermont’s family and friends, emergency responders, and forensic experts. It will also consider evidence from a previous trial that ended without a verdict. The presiding judge cautioned the jury against speculating on the reasons behind the earlier trial’s inconclusive outcome.
