Aughinish Alumina warns sanctions would impact power grid
Aughinish Alumina, a refinery based in Shannon, has warned the Irish Government that imposing sanctions on its alumina exports to Russia could have significant repercussions for Ireland’s national gas and electricity infrastructure. The company highlighted that it exports excess electricity to the national grid, enough to power approximately 200,000 households, and contributes around €25 million annually toward the maintenance and capital expenditure of the natural gas grid. Aughinish cautioned that restricting alumina sales to Russia could jeopardize the refinery’s viability, potentially leading to job losses and forcing the Government to cover the costs currently borne by the company for gas grid upkeep. These warnings come amid a controversy sparked by an investigation from a consortium of European media outlets, including the Irish Times, which alleged that alumina shipments from Aughinish were being converted into aluminium in Russian smelters owned by Rusal. The aluminium was reportedly sold by a Moscow-based trader to manufacturers producing weapons, including short-range ballistic missiles used in the conflict in Ukraine. The investigation cited customs and trade data suggesting that the alumina indirectly contributed to the production of Russian military hardware responsible for civilian casualties. In response, Aughinish Alumina has denied the claims that the majority of its alumina is sold to Russia. According to a letter from managing director Ciaran Kelleher to the Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, 55% of the refinery’s alumina in 2025 was supplied to European and global industries, with 45% exported to Russia. The company argues that EU sanctions targeting its exports would have little impact on Russia but could exacerbate inflation in European commodity markets. The briefing documents and correspondence emphasize the economic and operational risks for Ireland if the refinery’s exports are curtailed, underscoring the complex balance between geopolitical pressures and domestic energy and employment considerations.
