Romania scrambles jets as Russian drone hits apartments
A Russian drone struck an apartment building in Romania near the Ukrainian border, injuring two people and causing a fire on the roof, according to the Romanian Defence Ministry. The drone entered Romanian airspace overnight during a series of Russian attacks on Ukraine and crashed onto the residential building after being tracked by Romanian forces. Emergency services extinguished the fire, and the two injured individuals were treated for abrasions. In response, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and issued alerts amid growing concerns over airspace violations. This incident marks the first time a Russian drone has hit a residential building in Romania, although drone incursions have been detected dozens of times since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in 2022. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack as a "grave and irresponsible escalation" by Russia and has called on NATO to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to Romania. The event highlights the increasing risks faced by NATO-member countries bordering the conflict, as Russian air raids intensify and stray drones cross into allied territories. The attack follows a recent surge in Russian strikes on Ukraine, including a major bombardment over the weekend and a campaign of "systematic" strikes on Kyiv announced by Moscow. These escalations come amid Moscow’s retaliation for a Ukrainian strike that reportedly killed civilians in occupied territory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appealed to the United States for additional ammunition for Patriot missile defense systems to counter the growing threat of Russian ballistic missile attacks. Neighboring NATO countries such as Latvia, Estonia, and Poland are also experiencing heightened security challenges due to drone incursions and airspace violations. Latvia recently appointed a new government following the collapse of the previous administration, which was partly triggered by concerns over the country's air defense vulnerabilities exposed by stray Ukrainian drones. The Romanian drone strike underscores the broader regional security implications of the ongoing conflict and the need for enhanced defensive measures among NATO allies.
