EU ministers to discuss economic impact of war in Iran
EU finance ministers are convening in Brussels for a two-day summit to address the economic repercussions of the ongoing war in the Middle East, with a particular focus on rising energy costs. Ireland’s Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Simon Harris, is participating in discussions aimed at evaluating recent national measures designed to support households and businesses facing increased fuel prices. The summit marks the first in-person meeting of EU finance ministers since many member states introduced significant budgetary interventions to mitigate the economic impact of the conflict. In addition to the broader EU discussions, Simon Harris is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings, including one with Swedish Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson to discuss Ireland’s proposed new investment account. This initiative aims to encourage household investment through a special savings scheme featuring a low flat tax rate and exemption from capital gains tax, modeled on a similar Swedish system. Harris also plans to meet with German Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Kingbeil and Italian Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, underscoring Ireland’s active engagement ahead of its upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in July. The summit will also include an update from the European Commission on the EU’s collective response to the energy crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict. Harris emphasized the importance of sharing national policy experiences and preparing for Ireland’s leadership role in the EU. The following day, in his capacity as incoming Council President, Harris will participate in the annual economic and financial dialogue with regional partners, further highlighting Ireland’s commitment to steering EU economic policy during a period of geopolitical uncertainty and economic strain.
